Sculpture
This sculpture arose out of an experiment with the sensory, a challenge I accomplish through a balanced and draping composition of muslin set by fabric medium. The mushroom-like growths get their muted pallet from the blending of polymer clay scraps I have collected since my early childhood.
The meticulous yet natural composition of thread and wire allow life to jump right out of this textile sculpture. The garment’s prodding appendages take on almost symbiotic significance when worn as a corset, like sentient extensions of the wearer’s own limbs. The work’s title is also a nod to the six stitches I had to get after accidentally impaling myself with a pair of sewing shears during its creation.
Slug Whimsy aims to make fabric feel liquidy and dynamic with its four animated sculptures. The abstract stuffed creatures invite play, in both their clinging to the windows and individual curled shapes.
